Here you can find a full and free version of the VLC media player for Nokia N9 (and Nokia N950).
More developers, especially UI developers are needed. Testers are also welcome. If you want to help, please contact:
This should run on all Nokia N9 mobile phones. However this was only tested on an unlocked device. Nokia N950 devices are also supported.
Nokia N900 is not supported. Other MeeGo devices are not supported either.
This application is based on VLC media player version 1.2.0 (which is in pre-release stage at the VideoLAN project). Because it is a pre-release, there are some bugs. Otherwise, this is a standard VLC, including almost all of the features and plugins found in the desktop versions.
Follow these instructions step-by-step:
libvlc5 and vlc-player packages to your device.
dpkg -i libvlc5_*.deb vlc-player_*.deb
Hopefully, the process will be simplified as time permits and developer mode will not anymore be required. Help is needed to complete this project.
Once installed succesfully, there should be a VLC traffic cone icon in the application launcher.
Alternatively, advanced users can also start VLC from the command line as on desktop computers. For instance vlc --fullscreen will force fullscreen video playback.
To remove VLC, run this command and confirm:
apt-get remove --purge libvlc5
To upgrade, just reproduce the installation instructions with a new version of the packages.
All of the code for VLC on Nokia N9 has been included in the official VLC media player project at VideoLAN already. Nevertheless, you can follow the source link to the left.
